Most people think that decorating with black can be quite depressing, sombre, too formal or modern.  I believe that a little bit of black is necessary in every room;  it is stylish and dramatic, it provides a grounding effect and can be used in combination with any décor style!  If done correctly, it enhances colours and shapes around it and creates a soothing warmth in combination with the right lighting.  I’ve put together 5 tips for you to remember if you are adventurous at heart.

TIP 1 – USE THE RIGHT AMOUNT FOR THE SPACE

Like any dark colour, black can overwhelm easily.  Make sure that your lighting is adequate, but is doesn’t necessarily have to be natural lighting.  Some of the most beautiful hotel rooms rely on light fixtures to create a warm glow.  If you decide to combine black with white, then black should dominate the palette for a more elegant look.

TIP 2 – ACCESSORISE WITH CONFIDENCE

Instead of scattering small black ornaments around the room, don’t be afraid to make a statement with larger pieces such as a sofa, lamp or chair.

TIP 3 –  REPETITION IS KEY

Create repetition for your eye to move throughout the room.  It will also have a more unified effect on furniture pieces that have different styles.

TIP 4 – ADD DRAMA

Black and white is a classic combination, but the bath is the true queen of drama in this setting!

TIP 5 – WARM IT UP WITH NATURAL ELEMENTS

Last, but the most important in my opinion, textures and natural elements can instantly launch a room into perfection. Make use of what nature has to offer like timber and natural fibres like wool, cotton and linen. Look for items with simple details and interesting elements in soft lines and organic shapes. Animal hides and woven rugs will add an extra element of natural ambience to the room.

Have you taken the leap and introduced black into your home recently?  Send us a photo to admire or drop us a line – we always appreciate your feedback.

Cheerio ’til next time!
