The Vanilla Girls are always in desperate need for a quick caffeine fix and it was not by accident that we ended up at the Baron.  This funky, industrial style coffee shop in Castle Hill, North West of Sydney, has been our secret “pick me up” for the last few months.  We decided, because we are generally good people, that it would be a sin and extremely selfish not to share it with our readers.

With locally sourced ingredients and home made sauces and relishes, they’ve created a winning menu with some interesting variations on the good old favourites.

The Baron coffee shop

The Baron is the brainchild of three friends, Mike, Matthew and Ricky, who saw the potential in the leafy, family orientated suburb of Castle Hill, that had a general lack of funky coffee shops with a lively vibe.

VSD:  Where did you source your furniture from?

The 3 chairs next to the fridge I found in my back yard.  The fridge was donated by a customer, the original colour was dark blue.  Another customer suggested a paint job and did it for us.  The low, steel framed, colourful chairs around the tables were also donated by a customer.

VSD: We love all your industrial style lighting.  Were they also from your your backyard?

We found this great auction house in Alexandria called Mitchell Road Auction House.  Funny enough, it’s now temporarily located in O’ Riordan Street, not Mitchell Road, Alexandria.  They have a fantastic range of industrial style lighting and we purchased some of our furniture there too.  The big timber table closest to the window used to be an old barn door and works very well with our style.

The rough timbers, interesting furniture, enamel lighting and concrete flooring create a funky industrial feel to the interior.  For a bit of grunge, the walls were left unfinished and exposed steel water pipes create some added interest to the space.

VSD:  How long did the fit out of the shop take and who did it for you?

We had a team of friends who helped us with the plumbing, electrical work and building the counter.  The floor used to be carpet and tiles, but nothing a jackhammer couldn’t fix! Luckily the rugged floor adds some more character to the industrial interior.  The whole process took us about three months to complete.  We will be undergoing an upgrade soon, as we are now fully licensed and would like to open for evening trade as well.

VSD:  We are in love will all the signwriting.  Was it done by someone locally?

No, TJ Guzzardi, a very talented signwriter from Melbourne, did all the signwriting for us.  The map above the table is from Blacklist Studio.  They have a huge range of great prints.
